What is it?

What is a Profit & Loss Statement?

A Profit & Loss Statement (P&L) is the most important financial report for any small business. It summarises all income minus all expenses over a period to show whether you made a profit or a loss. It is the first thing banks, investors, and HMRC look at — and the first thing every business owner should understand.

Common use cases:

  • Summarising business performance for a month, quarter, or year
  • Preparing figures for your Self Assessment tax return
  • Applying for loans or finance (lenders always ask for a P&L)
  • Comparing performance year-on-year to spot trends
  • Making business decisions — can I afford to hire? Should I cut costs?

When to use this template

  • You need a clear summary of income vs expenses for any period
  • You are filing your tax return and need organised figures
  • You want to understand whether your business is actually profitable
  • You need to show financial performance to a bank, investor, or partner

Benefits

How This Template Helps Your Business

Know If You Are Actually Profitable

Revenue is vanity, profit is sanity. This template strips away the noise and shows you the one number that matters: are you making money?

Bank-Ready Financials

Every lender asks for a P&L. This template produces one in the standard format they expect — no reformatting, no explaining.

Spot Trends Before They Bite

Month-by-month and year-on-year views reveal problems early. A shrinking margin over 6 months is a warning. A P&L makes it visible.
