What is it?

What is a Balance Sheet?

A Balance Sheet is a snapshot of your business's financial position at a single point in time. It lists everything your business owns (assets), everything it owes (liabilities), and what is left over for the owners (equity). Unlike a P&L which shows performance over time, a Balance Sheet shows what your business is worth right now.

Common use cases:

  • Understanding the true financial position of your business
  • Applying for loans or credit (lenders almost always require a Balance Sheet)
  • Tracking whether your business is growing in value over time
  • Preparing year-end accounts for HMRC or Companies House
  • Making major decisions — can the business afford expansion, new equipment, or hiring?

When to use this template

  • You want to know what your business is actually worth today
  • You are applying for a loan, overdraft, or credit facility
  • You are preparing year-end accounts for HMRC or an accountant
  • You are a limited company required to file a Balance Sheet with Companies House
What's included

What Your Template Contains

Everything you need, pre-built and ready to use. Just enter your data in the blue cells.

Fixed and Current Assets

Fixed assets (equipment, vehicles, property) and current assets (cash, stock, money owed to you). Everything the business owns.

Current and Long-Term Liabilities

Current liabilities (bills due soon, credit cards) and long-term liabilities (loans, mortgages). Everything the business owes.

Equity Section

Owner's capital, retained earnings, and drawings. Shows what the business is worth to its owners after all debts.

Retained Earnings Calculation

Automatically calculates accumulated profits kept in the business rather than withdrawn.

Auto-Balanced Verification

The template checks that Assets = Liabilities + Equity. If it does not balance, something is wrong — the flag helps you find it.

Year-End Comparison

Compare this year's Balance Sheet against last year's to see how your position has changed.

Benefits

How This Template Helps Your Business

Know What You Actually Own

Revenue and profit are important, but they are not the full picture. A Balance Sheet shows whether your business is building real value or just spinning wheels.

Loan Application Essential

No serious lender approves finance without a Balance Sheet. This template produces exactly what they need in the standard format.

Catch Problems Early

A Balance Sheet reveals issues a P&L hides — growing debt, shrinking cash, assets losing value. See them before they become crises.
