What is a Balance Sheet?
A Balance Sheet is a snapshot of your business's financial position at a single point in time. It lists everything your business owns (assets), everything it owes (liabilities), and what is left over for the owners (equity). Unlike a P&L which shows performance over time, a Balance Sheet shows what your business is worth right now.
Common use cases:
- Understanding the true financial position of your business
- Applying for loans or credit (lenders almost always require a Balance Sheet)
- Tracking whether your business is growing in value over time
- Preparing year-end accounts for HMRC or Companies House
- Making major decisions — can the business afford expansion, new equipment, or hiring?
